Friday the 13th!

Friday the 13th…suppose to be a bad luck day? but I have always liked the number 13, so it is a good luck day around here!

The Special Olympic Scarves are going in the mail today to Tennessee. Kentucky reached their goal of 285 scarves!! Tennessee has a goal of 367 and has 272.   So off to Tennessee they go!! Thanks to Adell and Sandy who knitted or crocheted 3 each. 

Thank you both, and  all knitter and crocheters, who frequently make things for others. 

Downtown Coffee Bar is once again participating in desserts First, a fundraising event for Girl Scouts, on Saturday, January 28th at the Luther F. Carson Center.  It is a great night with desserts made from Girl Scout cookies.  We have chosen the Thank U Berry Much cookie and will begin expermenting soon for our wonderful desssert.  Information is below should you wish to by a ticket.

Desserts First 2012 – Paducah

In January of 2012, Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana’s Bear Creek Service Center will hold its fourth annual Desserts First fundraising event. Paducah’s finest restaurant chefs will create original desserts using the well-known Girl Scout Cookie varieties as the key ingredient and present them for tasting at the Carson Center in Paducah. This signature event is open to the public at large and will create an opportunity in which guests may network and enjoy an evening with friends, while sampling delicious, one-of-a-kind desserts created for this event. The evening will also include music, hors d’oeuvres, auctions, a judging crowning the best dessert of the event, and many more surprises!

Tickets: $30.
Corporate tables: $1000.

Downtown Coffee Bar is seeking artists to exhibit in our show titled “Dancing Shoes.” The exhibit is to highlight the “Dancing with Our Stars”, a fundraising event in March for the American Cancer Society. Show will open February 3, 2012 and run for the month of February. The Coffee Bar is located in historic downtown Paducah and is a family-friendly environment.

We are looking for artists to use the shoe as a symbol, to sculpt, paint, stitch, or embellish to create a work of art that celebrates the beauty of dancing.

Accepted medium: a shoe, ceramic, watercolor, acrylic, oil, pastel, pen and ink, photography, mixed media, collage, metal, or textile art. Artwork must include or suggest a shoe in some form, not to exceed 36”x36”. All work must be ready to hang, if applicable, or display and labeled appropriately on the back. Labels must include the following information: name, mailing address, phone number, email address, price, if for sale. Work need not be for sale, but sold work is subject to a 30% commission on all sales resulting from this exhibition. Downtown Coffee Bar reserves the right of refusal.

Donation Entry: A $20 entry donation payable to American Cancer Society.

Art is due to Downtown Coffee Bar, 426 Broadway, Paducah, KY on Wednesday, February 1 , 2012, 9am – 4pm. Art will hang for the month of February and should be picked up on Friday , March 2, 2012.

New Spaces

Happy New Year! Over the last couple of days we have taken down most of the Christmas decorations and rearranged. Thank you to my good friend M who moved furniture and things about to create this new wonderful space!   She did this type of thing in a former job and she thanks me for letting her move all the furniture about and create new window displays.  And I tell her, no really, Thank YOU!! 

It looks great!

End of the Year…

It is December 30, 2011.  Soon it will be 2012!  This year has flown by in many ways.  We have made some new friends at the Coffee Bar and have spent time with long-time friends!  I cannot say thank you enough for all the support from everyone in 2011!  I am looking forward to 2012 and all of the wonderful things it will bring!!  Happy New Year!!

As for knitting projects – I am currently knitting a scarf for the Special Olympics Winter Games.  This year we can send the scarves directly to our state of Kentucky!  I just checked the website and Kentucky has 208 scarves so far, with a deadline of sending them by mid-January.  Our group will be sending seven to add to the total next week!

Let it Snow….

Back at work on the Tuesday after Christmas and it is snowing!  It is not sticking – they say we may get an inch. It isn’t much, but it is pretty! 

 

Yesterday a few family and friends stopped in for an after Christmas potluck.  It was wonderful that so many folks came to eat and spend some time eating, talking and some played games!  ( I heard that Z beat J in UNO five games in a row!!  Go Z!)  It was lots of fun and great to see everyone.

I just want to say thank you to everyone who has supported and continues to support us and the Downtown Coffee Bar!  Many of you have come to be family and your support means the world!  Thank you all!!

Merry Christmas

Pink Boxes

You can see a picture of my excuse for not posting recently…  I had orders for 44 boxes of Ooey Gooey Buttercake and 21 boxes of cake bites for three of the ladies in the sales department at WPSD Local 6.  This year I had the system down on getting it all done!  Below is the picture of the last 11 boxes to go out today!  I was told by a customer of mine and theirs that my pink boxes are becoming famous!

Deer

Last week I mentioned another project that we worked on during craft night that we found on Pinterest.  You can see the results below…  It is a deer made from foam core board and wrapping paper.  P is the Queen of cutting out foam core board!!  She says the trick is using a sharp exacto blade.  I think she went thru 3 to cut all the parts out for the deer.   Now all the girlfriends want one….we will see.

This deer was a gift for M- whom I now call Camo Barbie –  cause she started hunting this past year.  She has not killed anything yet.  So, we thought we would provide her with her first deer.  It was received well and it now proudly hanging on her wall. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Upcycling and Friends

Pinterest….  need I say more??  This week two friends and I had craft night in order to make a couple of things we found on Pinterest!  The evening was fun – pizza, wine and girlfriends playing!  The picture is of the upcycle scarf I made from an old t-shirt and P is modeling it for the picture.  She made one, but it is smaller due to her using a women’s XL t-shirt instead of a man’s XL or larger (so learn from our mistake).   We also made another project, but since it is a gift for someone, no pic.

For those of us who have discovered Pinterest….we are looking for a 12 Step program to help us not spend hours, upon hours looking at all the wonderful stuff you can find there.  If you have not yet ventured there….you have been warned.

Shop Local

As the holidays approach,  think about giving a gift that sends a little love to our local businesses, as well as that special someone.   Many times we don’t know what gift to purchase for the person who has everything.   The following are some items to consider purchasing that would also help a local business:

Does he or she drink coffee or tea?  How about a pound of coffee or tea from your local coffee bar?

How about gift certificates from your local hair salon or barber?

Who wouldn’t appreciate getting their car detailed? 

Does she or he knit?  Do needlepoint?  Consider a couple of skeins of yarn or gift certificate from our local yarn shop

How about a book of gift certificates from various local businesses.

There are lots of owner-run restaurants — all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn’t the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint.

How about art, jewelry, pottery or a hand-knit scarf from a local artisan?.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip.

And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre?  Or tickets or gift certificate to go see a play as a gift .

How about a donation to a local charity in that person’s name?
